Mother’s Day recognition

I don’t often use my blog to pimp other blogs, but today is Mother’s Day here in the U.S., and we all make exceptions for our moms, right?

My mom and dad took a Mediterranean cruise about this time last year, to honor their 40 years of marriage. After an enjoyable and mostly uneventful cruise, Mom fell quite sick on the last day of the trip. They had to extend their stay a week, with Mom spending most of that time in a state-run hospital in Civitavecchia, Italy.

Recently my mom finished up her own series of blog posts about the trip, so I invite you to let her tell you the rest of the story.

  • A Long Trip for a Beer. While in England for a short time at the beginning of the trip, the folks grab some beers from a distant cousin’s brewery.
  • Time to Board the Ship. They spent a few days in Venice before the cruise.
  • Games, Music, Dance and Ouzo. The first few ports were in Croatia and Greece.
  • Photos from the Trip. This is a gallery of photos from the first part of the cruise, including a few shots of the folks.
  • Slipping in Santorini. The folks experience crowds in Santorini, and Mom takes an embarrassing fall.
  • Back in Time. The folks visit ancient religious sites in Ephesus.
  • Trapped in an Italian Hospital. Mom catches a fever on the last day of the cruise and chronicles her first several days in an Italian hospital.
  • Disappointing Friday. The wheels of healing continue to turn slowly as Mom awaits her release.
  • Free at Last. Mom is released from the hospital, but the folks still need to clear hurdles before returning home.
  • Meeting my Nurse. Mom won’t be allowed to fly home without someone to administer oxygen, so the insurance company sends a nurse from Toronto.
  • Final Segment. Mom and the nurse get to fly back to the U.S. in business class, while Dad flies home in steerage.
  • Lesson Learned. Mom shares some travel lessons learned, including a few surprising ones.

And to all mothers, I wish a Happy Mother’s Day.

  1. Thank you for publicizing my blog Curt. Writing about our travel lets me relive the adventure. I hope readers of my blog, and yours, will get some encouragement from our travel highs and lows and plan some adventures of their own. For us, having a trip in the planning stages gives us a goal to accomplish. We are already tossing around ideas for next spring’s trip.

    1. I hope so too. When I look through some of the stuff I wrote back in 1994, I realize details that seemed trivial then help me relive the experience now. I was on a strict budget back then and wrote a lot about what things cost. Seeing prices in currencies that no longer exist is quite a treat!
