Oktoberfest, BMW, Rothenburg, Baden-Baden, Eiffel Tower

Phew! It’s been about 72 hours since the last update, but we’ve managed to pack an awful lot in.

We arrived safely in Munich on Saturday, about six hours later than anticipated, so the thought of doing Oktoberfest that evening was quickly dismissed. My friend in Munich met us at the airport and showed us the way back to her place. After we washed 30 hours of traveling filth off our bodies, we went out for a serene evening at a nearby beer garden, where Kathryn had her first ever German meal. After all the traveling, we made it an early evening.

The next day, we decided to conquer Oktoberfest. At my friend’s urging, we went early. We found that most of the tables in the big tents were reserved, but it was still fun to walk around inside them and watch everyone make merry. We ended up at a smaller tent, where I had a maß of beer and we all had some food. Kathryn snapped a great picture of me with my beer. It’ll be online as soon as we get to an internet cafe.

We only spent a couple hours at Oktoberfest, and then we saw some of the city’s other sights. We saw the main city square, the cathedral, and couple of other churches, and the English Gardens. The English Gardens frequently have nude sunbathers, and since it was a very sunny day, we got to see a few of them. Unfortunately for me, they were all men, but Kathryn and my friend seemed amused.

We also made our way to the Olympic Tower. We went to the top for a view of the city and the surrounding region. Although it was a bit hazy, we could make out the mountains in the distance.

Yesterday morning was for me the most anticipated moment of the trip. We took the subway to the BMW European Delivery Center at Freimann and picked up my new car. Everything went extremely smoothly. The paperwork was completed in no time, the delivery specialist was very helpful in demonstrating the vehicle’s features, and we were out the door within about an hour. I don’t know what to say about the car, except that it’s absolutely gorgeous and a pleasure to drive.

The first leg of our journey by car took us to Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber. We did a quick walk around this Romantic Road village, and Kathryn bought some Christmas ornaments, which are being shipped home.

Our next destination was Baden-Baden. We arrived in the late afternoon and checked into our hotel, which was absolutely charming. We grabbed our swimsuits and headed into town. After a stroll through town, we spent a couple very relaxing hours in the waters of Caracalla Therme.

Today has been just as packed as yesterday. After breakfast at the hotel, we checked out and headed to Friedrichsbad, another thermal bath in Baden-Baden. We didn’t need our swimsuits for that one, but it was nice to bring a fresh change of clothes for after.

After the bath, we got back in the car and crossed the border into France, driving several hours and arriving in Paris earlier this evening. Finding a place to park the car was a bit of a nuisance, but we worked it out and were checked into our hotel in about a half hour.

This evening we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower and strolled around the Champs de Mars. That was really enough for one evening. I’m finishing this blog entry and going to bed.
